Restaurant Review: Veggie Kitchen

Ok guys, my first recipe is almost ready to post just putting the finishing touches to it as we speak I'm hoping to have it up for you on Saturday but in the meantime I received this review from our good friend Jim who on his contributions to this blog will be referred to as simply "N". Through "N" we will be able to get a different perspective from a non vegan who is interested in vegan lifestyle and food.

So enjoy his first contribution and get a good taste of whats to come....

As a non vegan with an interest and appetite for vegan fare, it’s difficult to imagine a more complete experience than dinner at Veggie Kitchen located in Northcote.

Often overlooked in the pantheon of fine eateries in the northern suburbs, Veggie Kitchen is easily one of the more unique offerings catering for vegan and gluten free diets while also drawing from the philosophies of Chinese Food Therapy.  It has been heartening to see this relatively small restaurant gathering momentum and gradual word of mouth acclaim online and from the vegan community.

Veggie Kitchen boasts both delicious home made tofu and soy milk and a Taiwanese based a la carte menu running the gamut from soups, dumplings, skewers and all manner of tofu based deliciousness in a relaxed intimate environment.  The variety on offer is where Veggie Kitchen truly distinguishes itself from other vegan restaurants.

Think you’ve tried vegan satay skewers?  “No chicken here!” my waitress cheerfully exclaims as I erroneously ask for the bird.  They are made of a flat soy protein, with a distinctive smoky taste so delicious that I rarely utilse the satay sauce on provided.

The Lettuce Delight is the Veggie Kitchen take on San Choi Bao.  Crispy lettuce cups filled with a mildly spicy tofu mix and topped with fried enoki mushroom.

For those tired of mock meat, there are any number tofu based dishes, including their renowned dumplings – a staple of each visit for me and my partner.  I can happily sit and eat a plate of twenty of these guys!

Of course no visit is complete without sampling the home made soy milk.  Typically we choose the Chai latte – creamy with a rich flavour and texture.

Reasonably priced (dinner for three was seventy five dollars last night) and with friendly and attentive service, Veggie Kitchen never fails to deliver.  Recently moving away from the northern suburbs, I am more than happy to make the half hour car trip to enjoy not only a a pleasurable dining experience but some damn fine home made vegan food with a fresh taste.  Highly recommended.
